"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Ferris Bueller

Most Endurance Athletes need to rethink their work-play-life balance.

Albert Einstein once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.  Think about this for a second and ask yourself, does this quote apply to the way I train?

We understand that most recreational endurance athletes just want to participate in their sport, stay fit and wear silly clothes.  If you want to wear silly clothes that’s okay with us, in fact we encourage it!  Hell,  isn’t having fun why we participate in our chosen sport anyway?  With that being said there isn’t anything “fun” about being overtrained, immobile, injured and weak. One of these outcomes is inevitable if your following a linear mileage based training plan. Ultimately, there’s more important things in life than your weekly mileage.  Just think about it.  Instead of pounding the pavement, you could be reading your child a bed time story or spending quality time with loved ones.  Yet, many athletes miss these simple pleasures because they “need to get the miles in.”  Who really has 20 hours a week to devote solely to training anyway?  That’s why we embrace an alternative training system based on the work-play-life balance.

If you’re looking for a system to help manage your work-play-life balance we can help.  Our programming provides an effective way for endurance athletes to train without neglecting their personal responsibilities.  Lets face it, the majority of amateur athletes aren’t privy to the luxuries bestowed upon a professional athlete.  Athletes like you and I have bills, family, work and life commitments that often take precedent over our sport. With that in mind, our program focuses on proven, time efficient training techniques. Our athletes core conditioning is developed by performing functional movements executed at high intensity. We then follow that up with a sport specific component for each individual athlete. In our experience this method has helped many athletes find an acceptable balance between their life, work and training. They accomplish all of this without compromising their athletic performance.  Do you actually enjoy getting up at o-dark-thirty for your mandatory weekly long run?  I sure didn’t!  I’d rather spend that time enjoying life with family and friends…this is what the work-play-life balance is all about.

There are no shortcuts…just hard work!

Looking for a magic pill?  Good news…we’ve found it and it’s called hard work! Virtually every athlete’s ultimate goal is to see an increase in their performance.  Unfortunately, long, slow distance style training provides little from a true performance perspective.  Some of the problems that recreational athletes encounter stems from the sheer volume of work involved in  typical periodized endurance training. The majority of recreational endurance athletes are over 30 years of age.  As we get older it becomes increasingly difficult to recover from long training sessions. Inevitabley, most athletes will become overtrained and/or injured while using a progressive mileage build up program due to a lack of diversification. What could be worse than training for months leading up to a race and getting injured two weeks out?  Accumulation based programming makes little sense considering that, at some point, all serious athletes go outside their sport-specific work to improve. Unfortunately, recreational runners, swimmers and cyclists rarely diversify their training sufficiently in order to prevent the occurrence of overuse injuries.  This is where our program differs. We specifically address each individual athlete’s training needs.  We focus on proper technique, biomechanics, mobility and pathology. This protocol, coupled with the use of  high intensity resistance training, has been extremely effective in developing our endurance athletes.  High intensity training is the cornerstone of our conditioning program. We slowly build upon that foundation with supplemental sport specific training.  We certainly continue to run, bike and  swim at intensity…but it’s all supplemental to our core conditioning program.  We strive to forge durability in our athletes through the usage of plyometrics, olympic lifting, gymnastics and dedicated strength training. This format allows us to safely provide you with superior training for any distance with drastically less impact on your body.

We understand that our program is contrarian in nature. It’s the opposite of what everyone is telling you. We get it! But, the fact remains that this training will work for any athlete with an open mind and a desire to compete .

Our program is evidence based and we’d be happy to provide you with specific case studies upon request. Let us show you how to achieve a healthy work-play- life balance. If you have any questions about our program please call or email us. 813-716-6717 or crossfitrevolution@gmail.com.

The doctrine of the strenuous life

IMG_4785

"I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph." Teddy Roosevelt

The Non-Negotiability of Perfection

IMG_5238
CrossFit is the pursuit of athletic perfection—performing difficult workouts with technical mastery under conditions of duress.  We’re looking for flawless form with a jackhammering heart, bursting lungs, and battery acid-filled veins.

When this is accomplished with unyielding intensity, the result is nothing short of beautiful.  When we fall short of the mark, the result is horrifying at best...http://againfaster.squarespace.com/articles/the-non-negotiability-of-perfection.html

The Hard Way

IMG_5236-1
Joi rocks out a deadlift.

We live in an age where fad diets and surgery are the preferred method of weight loss. Our gym has a much healthier approach...we preach accountability and hard work. It isn't easy loosing weight...it hurts...it's miserable...it down right sucks! But, if you dedicate yourself to a proper diet and exercise it will happen. No...not overnight, it will take some time! But, in the end the weight you lose naturally will be more likely to stay off. You'll gain flexibility, strength and reap a myriad of health benefits.

When people enter our program I instruct them to stay off the scale..."lets see how your clothes fit in a month". Inevitable their duds start falling off their hips...neck sizes shrink and their shoes fall off (ok..that last part is BS).

Gaining lean muscle mass is the key to fat loss...almost everyone who walks in the gym will gain some weight initially. Then something amazing happens...the pounds start to drop off.

So, you can do it the hard way (our way) or the easy way (their way)....its up to you?

Joi pictured above has lost 25lbs since she walked into the gym 3 months ago...amazing!
Way to go girl...I'm proud of ya...keep up the good work. E
